Assessment - Tier 3:
Diagnosing Complex Problems
Curriculum Based Evaluation (CBE)
- Curriculum-Based Evaluations are best defined by Deno (1987) as
"any set of measurement procedures that use direct observation and recording
of a student’s performance in a local curriculum as a basis for gathering
information to make instructional decisions" (in Shinn, 1989; p. 62).
Functional
Behavior Assessment (FBA) - Functional behavioral assessment is a
process for identifying (a) observable problem behaviors, (b) the contexts
or routines where the problem behaviors are most likely, (c) the specific
antecedent events within a context or routine that reliably predict
occurrence of problem behaviors, and (d) the consequences that appear to
maintain the problem behavior (Horner, Sugai, Lewis, 2007). The primary
purpose of a functional behavior assessment is to improve the effectiveness
and efficiency of a behavior intervention plan.
