The Basics: What is Response to Intervention (RtI)?
RtI is a proactive framework
for educating all learners using technically adequate, relevant data to
make instructional decisions; curriculum and instruction that are
empirically-supported; and applying a process of problem-solving to
drive decision-making within teams. In a time of
scarce or dwindling resources, RtI provides sound practices for the most
efficient and effective resource allocation in schools. When
implemented with fidelity, an RtI framework integrates what is already
working, eliminates what is not working, and yields increased
educational achievement for ALL learners. In addition, it's critical
that our practices will serve all learners in secondary schools to
prepare them for a future in the 21st century rather than the society
we (current educators) grew up and were educated in.
What RtI is:
A shift in how
instruction for all students is delivered
Efficient allocation of resources based on student data
Preventative and proactive
Adult behavoir change in order to increase student achievement
A framework unique to each building and district
What RtI is not:
A new way to identify students for special education (but it will help
us do a better job of this
More work for already burdened school staff
A new program to implement
Just about reading instruction (although this is really important!)
A one time service that hopes to influence lasting change
Secondaryrti.com is dedicated to the advancement of
RtI practices and "21st Century ready," educational outcomes
for all learners in secondary school settings. The content here is
provided by practitioners for practitioners. All information on this
website is research-based, data-based, and field tested by real
educators in real schools with real kids. Kids have taught us for
decades that good instruction will lead to high achievement for all
learners. Let's commit our actions to make that happen today!
